Helen | Senior 2013

When I started moving through the graduate application for the University of South Florida last summer, I  immediately brought captured along for the ride. As I drug my equipment through the sand for Lexi & Bryan’s Anna Maria Island Wedding, I knew that God was making a way for my future, my husband and my business. What an amazing blessing!

While planning my February trip to Tampa, I knew that I wanted to build in time for a senior session so that I could get the ball rolling before we re-locate for good in June. Thankfully, my dear friend, future roommate {hooray!} and Florida 2nd assistant, Ashley, had the perfect girl in mind. She connected Helen and I in January and during the weeks leading up to my trip we talked, texted while she shopped and created style boards in preparation for her session. It’s amazing how much planning and preparation can be done, even when you’e never met in person and don’t know the area very well!

I could tell that Helen had an an amazing heart from our earliest correspondence and was so thankful that she was trusting me, a complete stranger who {currently} lives half way across the country with her senior portrait experience. She put so much effort into her session, too, which really meant a lot. Her attention to detail from her outfits to her day-of makeup appointment all came together for a fabulous shoot.

Helen is a born-and-raised Florida girl who wanted to incorporate the tropical landscapes into her images. The morning of her session I spotted a tiny preserve not far from the USF campus and knew that was where we needed to start her session. The water, the trees, the….. alligators. Yep, I found a Florida backdrop for her alright! And she totally rocked it, despite my nerves about the hungry chompers she pointed out in the water…..

You might not believe it, but it was actually really cold in Tampa the day of Helen’s session. The temperatures were in the 50’s and the wind was sharp— brr! Ready to warm-up {I love that 50 degree weather will soon constitute blasting the heat in my car!}. we left the preserve and headed to the USF campus.

I have a lot of locations I love to shoot at in Manhattan and Kansas City but the top of my list in both cities are college campuses. I love them because they offer easy access and a unique blend of backdrops and couldn’t wait to explore my future University’s campus both for my own sake, and to scout out new spots!

I knew USF was going to treat us well when I started clicking my camera before we even got out of the parking garage…. I think this campus and I will quickly learn to be very good friends! By the way, Helen’s outfits on-campus started to blow my mind. She was & is beyond stunning. Wow.

This walkway is one of the iconic spots on the USF campus. I’d seen pictures online but absolutely fell in love seeing it in person. The pillars, wildflowers and palm trees create such a lovely, tropical feel– to see students walking around with backpacks was so strange. It’s hard to believe that I’ll be walking through here ever day to get to my new office building!

As the sun started to dip behind the tall buildings, we raced for an amazing wall I’d scouted out earlier in the day on my formal campus tour. I knew it would be perfect as a backdrop and couldn’t wait to take on the challenge of its geometry.

Despite the cold temperatures, Florida stays in-bloom year round and I couldn’t get enough of all of the flowers. Helen also loves flowers so we made a stop by this small rose garden for a few more tropical shots. I know I’ll miss fall next year but if it means I’ll be surrounded by landscapes like this all of the time, I think I’ll be okay…..

We wrapped Helen’s session right as the sun set over USF’s Marshall Student Center, my new building! I’m in love with the amphitheater feel of this space outside the building and it was a perfect backdrop for my favorite outfit she wore– this amazing chevron dress!
