When J and I helped Ashley and Ben move into their new house, we were almost immediately greeted by Jackie and Stan who live next door. Jackie, 8 months pregnant at the time, offered advice about the neighborhood gave us the run down of all of the families and Stan let us borrow his tools (we call him Stan-the-man for this reason). Best. neighbors. ever.
Flash forward a month and baby Mia arrives– early, but perfect in all senses of the word. When she was just 6 days new I had the opportunity to go over and spend the afternoon with everyone while Miss Mia got to be in the spotlight. She loved it and did a great job– being swaddled in scarves is no easy job!
Jackie and Stan said that they did not want to be in any of the pictures (plus they had another kiddo to chase around), so I “tricked” Jackie into holding Mia for a few and kept her in the frame. I know, I know. New moms never like having their picture taken. But you can’t get these 6-days-new moments back for mammas, either.
Jackie and Stan have a lot of wonderful friends and family members who were anxious to welcome this sweet girl into the world. Homemade blankets, perfectly selected headbands, and outfits galore kept us changing Miss Mia’s attire and location throughout the session. I love capturing these sweet little ones in outfits and blankets made by those who’ve been anxiously awaiting their arrival!
I also love the magic of newborn sessions because my approach is to not create images that reflect a baby doing anything they cannot do naturally. A baby, in time, will be able to prop its head up onto its hands but now is when I should be capturing newborn life, right? So we stick with a lot of laying 🙂
I also do all of my newborn sessions at the family’s home. So, with this set of images for example, what you can’t see is that Mia is on the family’s living room couch, blinds up to create the beautiful light, with toys, clothes and blankets strewn about on either side. No studio backdrops, no specialty lighting or photoshopping. Just this sweet lil’ one doing what she does best!
Jackie & Stan– thank you for sharing your sweet family and precious girl with me!
